Google’s May 2022 Broad Core Now Complete: Inside Story

Google has just announced on June 9th that the May 2022 broad core update roll is now completed. This rollout did come with a lot of volatility with SERPs and traffic, but it was nowhere near the size of broad core updates that the world experienced in 2021.

What’s A Core Update?

If you’re not familiar with Google’s core updates or are a little new to this, here’s a little breakdown of it:

Google’s major upgrades happen due to the company’s continuous effort to advance its search engine algorithms. By releasing routine core updates, Google can fine-tune its search engine to give the best outcomes possible for consumers.

These updates are based on different factors that can be many and varied. Sometimes, it’s simply a change to how Google interprets search queries. In other cases, it might be an update to the company’s indexing infrastructure.

Whatever the reason for a given core update, one thing is always true: These changes have significant implications for SEO.

When a core update is released, some sites will experience significant drops in traffic, while others will see commensurate increases. In some cases, the changes might be small enough to go unnoticed. But in other cases, the impacts can be significant.

Here’s what we know so far about Google’s May 2022 Core Update:

  • This core update is called May 2022 Broad Core Update
  • This update was launched on May 25th – lasted for 2 weeks
  • The broad core rollout was fully completed on June 9th at around 3:45 AM EST
  • This was a global update that impacted all regions and languages
  • Everything from snippets to Google discovery was affected by this update

The most recent Google Core Update was launched on May 25th, 2022. As with all typical core updates, this update took over two weeks to complete. This update caused some volatility in the SERPs, but it was not as significant as the previous year’s update.

Ignite Digital has been closely monitoring this update, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Whenever Google announces a core update, they never give off too much information initially, but we’re patiently waiting for an update to see exactly what changes were made and the niches that were impacted the most.

Google in the past has made announcements about exactly what was impacted by previous core updates, best practices, and/or how to recover if your website lost rankings and/or traffic. Unfortunately, they haven’t yet, but when they do, we will be sure to make another post and keep you updated!
