Why You Should Not Build Your Own Website

“He who knows the price of everything knows the value of nothing”

If you run a business every penny counts. You need to be able to ensure that the money you are spending is going to the right people. However, there is a difference between value for money and doing things at the affordable cost.

This is certainly the case with websites. While a lot of marketing is now done via social media sites, blogs and any number of other avenues the bulk of your traffic is still going to come to a central website. This is where people go to learn about you, find out where you are and in a lot of cases purchase items from you.

On the one hand, you may be someone lacking in computer literacy. There is nothing wrong with this. However, this may make the people who promise you easy website building tools that allow you to make your own website intriguing to you. They say how you can use support forums, video tutorials and lots of other stuff to make it sound simple.

The Problem Companies

The problem is that these sites/companies will often then insist you get a contract, often automatically removing funds from your bank account. This is fine while the website works, but should you decide you want to go elsewhere cancelling the deal is incredibly difficult.

On the other hand you may be someone who is technologically very confident. But just because you have the skills to build a website does not necessarily mean you have the flair for it. You could have one of the most efficient websites in the world that does everything perfectly, but if it does not grab people’s attention then it is unlikely to be effective!

Time to Start Building

This is why it is best to find someone to do the website for you. If you can get a friend who can build these for you as a favor then great (although you’d better make sure you don’t have a falling out with said friend!) However, there are a lot of people who do this for a job that will be happy to work with you and set up a site that is appropriate for your needs. Here is a selfish plug – we build enterprise websites!

As with any work the best thing is to shop around. The good thing about the Internet is that you get information pretty quickly, so you can get feedback on services and decide who you want to work with. You may choose someone from next door or an international company. Whoever you pick it is important they work with you and understand your needs.

Of course there is also the fact that time spent working on a site could be better spent on small business marketing such as spreading the word via social media, or focusing on your business itself, especially if you are just starting out!

In short, think very carefully about whether you want to do your website and shop around to find the best person to make and maintain your website for your business. Remember it is your business, and you need to make the most of it!
